Understanding deprivation in healthcare access is crucial for addressing disparities. This study examines economic barriers using a multidimensional approach, quantifying financial constraints, analyzing socioeconomic determinants, and evaluating policy interventions. Using data from the 2020 European Survey of Health in Spain (ESHS), the study applies the Alkire-Foster methodology to measure deprivation and the Generalized Inflated Discrete Model (GIDM) to account for response inflation.
Results show that 10% of the population experiences economic barriers, with significant disparities. Among the key factors influencing deprivation, income, and education are the most important. Recognizing their impact, we structured policy experiments targeting these variables. Our findings indicate that education policies are more effective in reducing deprivation, particularly in terms of incidence and inequality, while also being 24.9% more cost-efficient.
