N. Massarelli

In March 2025, the UN Statistical Commission endorsed the 2025 System of National Accounts (2025 SNA) as the new global standard for the compilation of national accounts. This was the outcome of a complex, inclusive process which involved hundreds of people from all over the world and from different institutional settings, including compilers and users of national accounts from national statistical offices, central banks, ministries, research centres, academia, etc.
The main innovations from the previous 2008 SNA are in the area of globalisation, digitalisation and well-being and sustainability. These changes are essential to keep the SNA relevant for its users.
Following the approval of the 2025 SNA, the European System of National and Regional Accounts (ESA 2010) is being updated to bring it in line with the new SNA.
The presentation will touch upon the SNA-update process, before illustrating the main innovations introduced in the 2025 SNA, their implications for compilers and users, in particular in view of updating ESA 2010.

Keywords: SNA, ESA, macroeconomic statistics, globalisation, digitalisation, wellbeing and sustainability
