Se describen las fases del ciclo de vida del combustible nuclear utilizado en las centrales nucleares españolas, así como las características principales del almacenamiento en seco del combustible nuclear quemado. Se presentan varios modelos matemáticos para optimizar la asignación de elementos de combustible nuclear gastado a contenedores (cápsulas MPC-32) destinados a albergar estos residuos nucleares. Se aplican los modelos a un caso hipotético de la central nuclear de Ascó en el año 2028.
